2020 Recap at Flourish Flower Farm

2020 Recap at Flourish Flower Farm

2020 has indeed been an unprecedented, challenging, overwhelming, devastating year, but I’m going out on a limb to say that 2020 was also a good year. In many ways it was actually a great year. As a farmer, business owner and individual I learned so many valuable lessons this past year and I am excited to build on these lessons and carry them with me into the future.

Our Workshops + Guest Teaching Events in 2019

Our Workshops + Guest Teaching Events in 2019

We get asked so often whether the farm is open to visitors and sadly the answer is usually no. Because we are such a small team (as in, just 2 of us most days), there is just isn’t time in the average day to properly entertain visitors. That is why I get so excited about our workshops because these are times when we love having visitors at the farm! This year we are hosting 6 workshops for our ‘On the Flower Farm’ workshop series and I’ll be guest teaching at several conferences in Western North Carolina.

Pantone Project with Carley of 'Long Live Simple'

Most of you know how important collaboration is to me personally and to what we do at Flourish. Whether its collaborating with photographers for styled shoots or a calligrapher to create special details at our workshops, I love working with other local artists and creatives! So I was so excited to have the opportunity recently to interview local Asheville graphic designer Carley Lee, owner of Long Live Simple.

Flower Farming Books

Flower Farming Books

I love reading! Give me a good book over TV any day and I'm a happy gal. But sadly I don't have (or make) the time during the busy farm season to do much reading - probably because I fall asleep as soon as I sit down. So winter is my chance to catch up on all the reading that I daydream about during the summer. While historical fiction is probably my "escapist" reading of choice, winter reading is also about catching up on research and new ideas too. So here are some recommendations from this winter, plus all time favorites for inspiration and reference that have a permanent place at my desk.

Fall on the flower farm

Fall on the flower farm

It can be very difficult to find time to document the beauty blooming on the farm. Most days are spent picking flowers for orders very early in the morning, getting orders out the door and doing whatever farm chores need to be done. But I wholeheartedly believe that its important to put a little time aside to document the season. So this fall, I convinced William to actually be in some photos with me (which was no small feat!). We invited our sweet friend Meghan Rolfe to come out to the farm and she captured everything so perfectly.

Give a little love

Valentine's Day has never been about red roses and sugary treats in our house. My husband rarely bought me flowers even before I had a flower farm and design studio, and of course even less often now. Perhaps its because no matter how thoughtfully he displayed them, I always wanted to rearrange them, put them in a different vase, move them to a new location - basically to put my own touch on the arrangement (sorry honey!). William and I tend to shy away from the consumerism surrounding most holidays, but use February 14th as a day to celebrate our marriage, to reflect on how grateful we are for each other and to plan an extra special date night.

The First Week

Even though its only Wednesday, this has been a very busy first week as a full-time farmer. (I still feel like someone should pinch me - I can hardly believe that this is actually happening!) As much as I wish the weather would warm up and the ground would dry out so I can get to work outside, I know that this office time is crucial. Once I have plants in the ground, these hours of planning will quickly slip away. Here are some of the things happening at Flourish this week:

So it begins...

Its official... the Flourish Farm is really happening. For those of you who've known me for a long time, you understand just how monumental this moment truly is. For years I have been dreaming of being a farmer, of sharing what I grow. And let's be honest: I am obsessed with flowers. After several months of spending my evenings and weekends writing a business plan, crunching numbers and dreaming (literally) of flowers, I am taking the leap to start my business.
